Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club scores an "Eagle"
On Friday, April 27, Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club, a member of the Golf Group, adopted a four (4) week old "eaglet" named "Rocky."
It all started in December 2006, Dave "Smokey" Sukkert, a Starter/Ranger for Rock Springs Ridge, spotted a new eagle nest being constructed in a tall pine next to the 8th West green. John Abbott, General Manager and Chris Cyr, Golf Course Superintendent, instructed Dave to keep a close eye on the new nest, since Dave has over 12 years experience with birds of prey. Dave reported the new eagle nest to Doris Mager, known as "The Eagle Lady." At Doris' request, Dave also contacted Lynda White of the Florida Audubon Association to record the nest with "Eagle Watch."
On Thursday, April 26, Dave reported a "newborn eagle sighting" to Lynda White that appeared to be a three-to-four week old chick. Shortly following the call, Dave was contacted about the possibility of placing another eaglet into the nest for adoption. The Florida Audubon Society had rescued an eaglet from the Sanford Airport, and desperately needed a "home" for this eaglet. Lynda visited Rock Springs Ridge on Thursday afternoon to see if the nest would be a good adoption location. Lynda observed that there was only one eaglet in the nest, and since both birds were very close in age and size, she said it was a good match. Center Supervisor Diana Flynt also visited on Friday morning to confirm Lynda's observations and give final approval for an adoption.
"Adoption" occurred on 6pm on Friday, April 27, just one day following the initial sighting. By 7pm, Rocky the eaglet was in his new home at Rock Springs Ridge! As a new "member" of Rock Springs Ridge, Rocky is easily the most exciting "eagle" ever reported at the club.
